The Old Home Town Where I Grew Up
My 65 Chevy parked in front of my childhood home. Notice the dirt road.
We had running water by this time and we had power as well even natural gas. No telephone however. This all happened after the kids grew up and left for the wide wide world to seek their fortunes.
My Mother and Father. Dad was a Jack of all Trades and a Master of all. Trained in Germany. My Mother of course had her hands full with taking care of and feeding 9 kids. I have no idea how they managed through the Dirty Thirties but they did.
And here I am today, no worse for ware a successful artist, graphic designer, sign painter and competitive archer. Now as you know, I spend a lot of time feeding and watching my birds, rabbits and pussy cats!
My first bow. I managed to shoot a rattle snake on this day. The only other animal I shot was a rabbit and that cured me of ever shooting a living thing again. It was targets only forever more and I have the trophies to prove it.

More from brother August
The shop that my brother August works in is absolutely filled with shelves holding his past work. I keep telling him to create a blog or put his work on E bay because it would be an excellent way for him to earn extra income.
He seems to be too busy carving to get around to selling anything!!!

Another Brothers Work
I have 7 brothers and 1 sister. Almost all of us are artist's in one way or another. We used to say we had a baseball team just among ourselves.
Enough trivia, the pictures you see here are just some of my brother August's carvings. He has done a lot more believe me.
These are just a sample, a toilet paper holder and two urns for ashes of the deceased. All of his work is for sale and you will find more pieces later on.

License Plate Art
I painted this "Vanity Plate" at the request of the owner of Buffalo Air, Joe McBryan when he first started his company. The dollar bill is an actual copy of the actual "First Dollar" his company made.
The serial number is the actual one off the paper bill. One final note is that paper 1 dollar bills no longer exist in Canada. The Canadian Mint now produces only the Looney, a coin version of the currency once represented by the 1 Dollar Bill.
For those interested in Buffalo Air follow this link:
I also painted a replica of the license plate on the nose of his first aircraft, a WWII Vintage DC3 which is still a working part of the fleet.

Dark-Eyed Junco
This fellow isn't in the Birds of Alberta book so once again I had to go down to Kerry Wood Nature Center to find out what he was. Dorothy the staff member on duty was most helpful and nice. We had a good chat and I even made her one of my famous Rick Name Tags. And that folks is a whole other story in and of it's self...

Cedar Stump Carving
This carving was done by my brother Peter. It was carved out of a large cedar stump with the roots still in place. I have removed the background clutter so the details of the carving are more evident.
The actual carving is about 4 ft wide by 3 ft by 6 ft.

Artist's Palette Sign
When my brother Peter the prolific artist decided he need a name sign for their home, his creative mind went into overdrive as usual and this is the result.
Peter over the course of his career created Old McDonald's Farm south of Kelowna BC., Calloway Park in Calgary, The Bucking Bronc Statue in Ponoka, AB, the Gopher statue in Torrington AB, not to mention the Walt Disney Stage Coach to name just a few large projects.
He continues to create from his studio in Windfield BC.

A Berry Nice Day
Ok so it's a bad pun but I love the berries on the Mountain Ash trees this time of the year. Later on in the winter around Feb, the berries have fermented somewhat and the Cedar Waxwings come in huge flocks to the trees. After the feeding frenzy has ended, quite often there are birds staggering around on the ground like a bunch of drunken sailors on shore leave. You guessed it... They are drunk from the alcohol in the berries !!!!
And I'm not kidding about this, I've seen it in past winters. What a hoot. Speaking of which, I need to get a picture of a Hootie Owl
Full Moon Rising
A Harvest Moon, taken this last weekend. The Harvest Moon name has it's roots in the past. In times gone by, this full moon in September told farmers of long ago that it was time to start their corn harvest. No really, it's a fact. Another tid bit is that when the September full moon happens to fall on September 21st, it is called a "Super Harvest Moon" .
Now you have been dazzled not only by the moon light but by my brilliant store of useless knowledge. LOL
